Recruiting young talent

Laying the foundations for future development

We believe that the targeted recruitment of young talent cannot be started early enough. Initiatives such as the “Dream of Flying” competition for nursery-school children and the “First Flight Trials” workshop for their school-age counterparts are a playful and entertaining way to approach careers in aerospace. Students who are about to take their final school exit exams can find specific information about training paths in aviation in the “Start 2 Fly” careers guidance project. They will also be provided with detailed advice on careers in the healthcare, industry and manual-trade sectors. The “Training for the Future! Find out What Fits” training fair and the “Young Professionals Aerospace” series of events both provide excellent opportunities to make direct contact with potential trainees and young academics. Projects and initiatives

Arouse the curiosity of even the youngest children

Since 2016, this competition has been exploring how the very youngest imagine flying. The Dahme-Spreewald district and the Economic Development Agency encourage four to six-year-olds to present their ideas on a large screen, as a collage, or a model of a rocket or space. Anything with an aerospace-related theme is allowed.

The first three winning nurseries will be awarded a cash prize. The first-place finishers will also receive an invitation to the ILA Berlin Air Show, which is held every two years in the Dahme-Spreewald district. (Note: Due to the cancellation of the ILA 2020 aerospace exhibition, the awards ceremony will take place at the Aerospace Technology Centre Schönefelder Kreuz in Wildau. The date will be announced later.)

All competition entries will subsequently be shown in a small “touring exhibition” in Königs Wusterhausen and Lübben.

Career guidance for primary school pupils

How do planes fly? How does lift happen? How can a model aeroplane fly without controls? Primary school children with an interest in technology learn the answers to these questions in practical exercises and experiments. For example, engineers from the VDlni Club Berlin show the children how different things “set themselves in motion” with the help of electronic components, how home-made gliders behave in flight and how drones take off and land safely.

The Dahme-Spreewald Economic Development Agency and the VDlni Club Berlin initiated the pupils’ workshop in 2017 to give six- to twelve-year-olds an age-appropriate introduction to the world of aviation technology. The event takes place under the patronage of Tina Fischer, member of the regional parliament, who has been committed to vocational guidance in the Dahme-Spreewald district for many years.

Training opportunities in and around the airport

The “Start 2 Fly” career guidance project is part of an overall concept for the promotion of young talent in the Dahme-Spreewald district and focuses on the key aerospace sector.

The aim is to give grammar-school and sixth-form students a deeper insight into the career opportunities in the aerospace sector and to showcase the many different career paths available through vocational training and study programmes in the region.

Informational event

The ninety-minute information sessions take place directly in schools. The information events focus on an extensive presentation of the range of professions available in the aerospace industry in the region. A wide variety of career paths are highlighted, starting with apprenticeships and regional study programmes and ending with career entry opportunities.

Workshop

The five-day workshop provides students with theoretical and practical insights into the aerospace industry. At the workshop the students are introduced to the variety and main substance of the professions in the aviation sector and glean key background information from the lecturers’ own professional experience. In addition to aviation-related English-language skills and joint project work, the agenda also includes practical exercises and materials science.

Discovering job profiles in the area

The aim of this project is to show secondary-school students in the 9th to 11th grades the various vocational opportunities in the key sectors of the Dahme-Spreewald district. In cooperation with partners in industry, the project is also intended to prevent young people from dropping out of training and moving away from the area.

Informational event

Over the course of a one-and-a-half hour information event at school, students are provided with essential information on companies that provide training opportunities and criteria for trainees in the health sector, industry and the manual trades.

Workshop

Over the course of a week, young people are given theoretical and practical insights into different companies that provide training opportunities in the Dahme-Spreewald district. They learn about a variety of job profiles and their main topics of focus and get important background information on training opportunities.

Regional training fair – guidance for students and parents

Every year the Economic Development Agency organises the “Training for the Future! Find out what fits!” training fair for the Dahme-Spreewald district at the “Oberstufenzentrum” sixth-form college in Königs Wusterhausen. Here companies from the region present their varied career opportunities and recruit young talent. Experience shows that if trainers and their current trainees speak to students, parents and grandparents directly, it is easier to establish contact and avoid any potential inhibitions that may otherwise hamper the discussion. Hands-on technology and captivating interactive initiatives at the exhibition booth further increase participants’ curiosity about a company. Most of the companies have taken part every year – for us that’s the best proof that the concept works.

Career-entry orientation for young academics

The Dahme-Spreewald Economic Development Agency has initiated the “Young Professionals Aerospace” event series for young academics. Four times a year, students, graduates, postgraduates and young professionals from technical disciplines are given the opportunity to learn more about a career in Berlin-Brandenburg as a centre for aerospace and to talk directly to potential employers. First-rate speakers from business and science highlight career-entry and development opportunities and pass on their own professional experience.
