International technology location

Perfect conditions for innovation and cooperation

In the middle of the dense university and research landscape of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region and only a few kilometres southeast of the Berlin city limits, an up-and-coming location for high-tech production, intelligent services, research and training has established itself along the Dahme river. More than 1,500 highly qualified employees now work in the technology region of Zeuthen – Wildau – Königs Wusterhausen.

The heart of the technology region includes the Technology and Science Park Wildau with the Wildau Technical University of Applied Sciences, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP, the Aerospace Technology Centre, the Centre for Future Technologies (ZFZ) and the Technology and Start-up Centre Wildau as well as the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY in Zeuthen, which belongs to the Helmholtz Association.

Foreseeable investments, including for the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research of the Robert Koch Institute, the scientific centre of the Cherenkov Telescope Array CTA at the DESY site in Zeuthen as well as the development of the Funkerberg Technology Park belonging to the town of König Wusterhausen, will give the high-tech location in the vicinity of the capital’s BER airport a boost of sustainable growth.

Better Together: People, Nature and Technology

Located on the motorway A10 (Berliner Ring), between BER and TESLA, the district of Dahme-Spreewald (LDS) is one of the most prosperous regions in Germany. To further strengthen the location, business, science and municipalities in the particularly aspiring northern part of the district have joined forces as the regional network dahme_innovation.

The economic research company Prognos also certifies that the district will rank first in Germany in terms of both economic growth and employment development by 2030. Already today, the region dahme_innovation offers:

  • a very well developed technology and innovation location with more than 70 forward-looking companies
  • an efficient and internationally networked university and science landscape
  • a broad spectrum of competencies, especially in the areas of digitalization, mobility, green tech and life science
  •  high-quality employment opportunities
  • an extremely pleasant living and working environment.

Together with the Dahme-Spreewald Economic Development Agency, the participating players are committed to location development and location marketing. In the next few years, for example, a Welcome Center for international guests and a program that promotes the development of young, high-growth start-ups in a structured manner are to be launched.

There is a tradition of innovation along the Dahme: The Miersdorf Institute, a forerunner of today's DESY, was established in the Zeuthen district of the same name as early as 1950. At the same time, the foundation stone of today's Wildau Technical University (TH Wildau) was laid with the Wildau School of Engineering, which was founded in the course of German reunification and is also a partner of dahme_innovation. In addition, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (IAP) with its research field Polymer Materials and Composites (PYCO) has been recruited from the research sector as a member of the young regional network. In addition, the Academy for Administration and Business Management (VWA) as a further education institution is one of the founding partners of dahme_innovation. At the municipal level, the network is supported by the municipality of Zeuthen and the cities of Wildau and Königs Wusterhausen. The Technology and Start-up Centre Wildau and LOK21, a provider of office and workshop space, also support dahme_innovation as founding partners.

Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP

Polymer development and production of plastics

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP researches and develops highly crosslinked polymers for lightweight construction and micro- and optoelectronics with its PYCO research unit at its Wildau site. These are key elements in the manufacture of components for transport technology, aerospace, information and communication technology and equipment technology. Research also focuses on new (nano)materials, reactive resin formulations, prepregs, core materials, layered composites, fibre-reinforced plastics and sandwich structures as well as bi-stable displays, optically integrated components and barrier layers. The PYCO research area covers the entire development chain from monomer to finished component.

Center for Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research at the Robert Koch Institute

Since 2021, the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research (ZKI-PH) has been located in the Center for Future Technologies. It aims to strengthen the transdisciplinary field of public health with new methods and to set new impulses both nationally and internationally. The use of AI-based technologies will make it possible to harness large and complex data sources in the future, for example, to analyze epidemics more comprehensively and further develop early warning systems. The improved calculation of disease burdens or the visualization of complex correlations are also goals of the ZKI-PH.
